JAD Health Fair 2006
In keeping with its goal of increasing public awareness of hearing health, The Hearing Services Division of the Jamaica Association for the Deaf had its first Health Fair on Saturday March 25, 2006 at the Social Development Commission (SDC) at 1 Springfield Road, Morant Bay, St. Thomas. The aim of the Heath Fair was to provide free medical consultation for members of the community and to increase the awareness on the care of the body and maintenance of healthy lifestyles.
The Health Fair, which was declared open by Matron Howell of the Princess Margaret Hospital, served 140 persons from the community and surrounding areas. The services provided were hearing screening, vision testing, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, hemoglobin tests, foot care and ear, nose and throat consultations. Other presenters included the National Health Fund, St. Thomas Cooperative Credit Union and Medi-Grace.
The Health Fair was made possible through the generous donations of cash and kind from various organizations, totaling in excess of $150,000. From these donations we were able to employ the services of the St. Thomas branch of the Diabetes Association of Jamaica, the Lions Club International, and the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.
The day was an overall success and it is the hope the Hearing Services arm of the JAD that this will become an annual event. We wish to thank the Social Development Commission for their hospitality. Thanks again to all our sponsors and to the Hearing Services Team that worked tirelessly for this event to be a success.
